The MEDHP Monthly – July

A Word From Sam

Well it’s taken about six weeks, but the MedHP Blue Zone sign has finally started getting people’s attention! Quite a few members have asked me lately what it actually means, which tells me one of two things: either you’re all becoming incredibly observant… or it took six weeks to look up!

So here’s what it’s all about…

There’s actually a double meaning behind it.

Firstly, Blue Zones are regions around the world where people consistently live longer, healthier lives than the rest of us. Places like Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy and Nicoya in Costa Rica are home to an unusually high number of people living well into their 90s and even past 100.

Coincidentally, they’re also amazing places to visit,  which is great news because I can now justify a trip to Sardinia as ‘longevity research.’  Thank you ATO!

The obvious question is why do people living in Blue Zones live so much longer? It’s a question researcher’s have been trying to answer for years. Is it the food? The sunshine? Good genes? A daily glass of red wine?

The answer is a little bit of everything!

People living in Blue Zones tend to move their bodies every day, eat mostly whole foods, stay socially connected, manage stress well and have a strong sense of purpose.  They’re not chasing quick fixes or searching for the next miracle health hack. They’ve simply built healthy habits and repeated them consistently for decades.

Now, here’s where MedHP’s version of the Blue Zone comes in.

Our bright blue HUR strength machines have become our own little Blue Zone because strength is one of the biggest predictors of healthy ageing.

The stronger you are, the easier life becomes.

Getting up from a chair. Carrying the shopping. Climbing stairs. Lifting grandchildren. Travelling. Gardening. Staying independent.

Muscle is one of the best investments you can make for your future. It helps protect your bones, improves balance, supports your metabolism and gives you the physical reserve to keep doing the things you enjoy for longer.

So next time you’re in the gym, spend a little time in our Blue Zone.

It’s almost like Sardinia!

The funny thing is, the people living in the world’s Blue Zones probably aren’t thinking about living longer. They’re simply doing the right things consistently, year after year. That’s exactly what we’re trying to create here at MedHP.

And while we’re talking about consistency, winter always seems like a good time for a little reminder.

The colder mornings, darker evenings and temptation to stay rugged up at home can make it much easier to hit the snooze button or convince yourself you’ll “get back into it next week.”

You’ve come so far!  Don’t fall off the wagon!

Motivation comes and goes.  Routine is what gets results.

The members who make the biggest improvements aren’t necessarily the fittest or strongest when they start. They’re simply the most consistent. They keep turning up, even on the cold mornings when motivation is nowhere to be found.

So don’t let winter knock you off course. Keep your appointments. Keep moving. Spend some time in our Blue Zone. Before you know it, the warmer weather will be back, and you’ll be stronger, fitter and healthier because you stayed the course.

After all, stronger summers are built in winter!

See you in the Blue Zone!

MedHP Clinic Updates

We are also excited to be hosting an upcoming MedHP Hub Allied Health Night with presentations from Sam Waley (Exercise Physiology), John Humphrey (Physiotherapy) and Samantha Woodland (Podiatry). This is a must-attend evening covering a range of valuable topics, including appropriate footwear selection, how to prevent foot complications, dizziness and balance, brain training, and strategies for healthy longevity. Expect plenty of practical, evidence-based advice from industry leaders to help keep your body on track.More details are still to come so keep your eyes peeled for our latest announcements.

With cold and flu season well and truly here, we kindly ask all members to please remember to wipe down machines and equipment after use. This simple habit helps reduce the spread of germs and protects fellow members, staff and many of our clients who may be managing chronic health conditions. We appreciate everyone continuing to help us maintain a clean and healthy training environment.

Meet Meg and Austin!

This month, we wanted to officially introduce two familiar faces who many of you already know well around MedHP, Meg and Austin.

Many of you will already know Meg, who previously completed her student placement with us. She quickly impressed the team and became much loved by everyone she worked with, so we knew we had to bring her on board. As an Exercise Physiologist, Meg brings incredible enthusiasm and is passionate about helping people feel stronger, move better, and continue enjoying the activities that matter most to them.

You all know Austin, who has been part of the MedHP team for more than three years working across the front desk and as an Exercise Scientist. For many members, Austin has been the friendly face welcoming you through our doors each day and helping make MedHP the community what it is today. Austin strongly believes in delivering individualised, evidence-based care that empowers people to maintain their health and continue doing the things they enjoy.

We’re incredibly lucky to have both Meg and Austin as part of the growing MedHP team and look forward to continuing to support our community together.
