WHAT IS FITNESS ALL ABOUT

Maintaining strength and fitness as you age is an essential element of staying healthy and living well.

The average Australian’s lifespan has increased by around 11-years over the last 50-years, and with advancements in modern medicine and screening techniques this trend is going to continue.

How do you want to live, and what things would you like to be able to do in the future?

It might be time to travel, by plane or caravan. Perhaps you want to perfect your golf swing or continue to move swiftly around a tennis court.

Herein lies an important question, ‘are you fit for your age?’

Maintaining strength and fitness as you age is an essential element of staying healthy and living well.

The average Australian’s lifespan has increased by around 11-years over the last 50-years, and with advancements in modern medicine and screening techniques this trend is going to continue. We are living longer than ever, but it’s not really about how LONG we live (lifespan), it’s about how WELL we live (healthspan).

Losing independence

Being confined to a chair or having no capacity to socialise with friends or loved ones is the slippery end of the ‘don’t take action’ slope. We need to be proactive. It is how we choose to act, the lifestyle decisions that we make, and the health habits that we create now that will influence how well we live in the future.

The good news on this front

Is that exercise may be the most potent and accessible way of influencing your healthspan. Regular physical activity and exercise combats age related decline, prevent chronic disease and illness, and will help to keep your physiological age (how you move, act and feel) considerably less than your chronological age (the number.)

This is about growing stronger, not older!
Having the freedom in your body to be able to do the things you want do, when you want to do them, is closely tied to quality of life and good health.

How do you want to live, and what things would you like to be able to do in the future?

It might be time to travel, by plane or caravan. Perhaps you want to perfect your golf swing or continue to move swiftly around a tennis court. Maybe it’s having the strength (and energy) to keep giving your Grandkids a run for their money, or simply remaining capable of maintaining your garden. Whatever it is, you will require a body that can move and perform the way you need it to.

Understanding your body’s current physical status and identifying limitations (if any) is the first step towards creating a fitter, stronger, more functional, and independent you.

Herein lies an important question, ‘are you fit for your age?’

Introducing a Bluff Road Medical Fitness initiative: The Functional Milestones Assessment (FMA)

The FMA is a comprehensive strength

Fitness and balance screening tool that will help to identify what your current physical status is, how that relates to your age, and ultimately will give you the tools and tailored exercise programming that aligns with your future plans and addresses areas that may need attention.

The FMA protocol incorporates
Body composition analysis (a non-invasive test to distinguish lean muscle tissue volume and body fat mass), as well as a sequence of strength, fitness and balance tests under the guidance of an Exercise Physiologist.
These tests will provide a detailed evaluation of your current physical status and help to highlight deficient areas of your body that need addressing.
The aim is to keep you feeling well, and moving well.
